This panel discussion will focus on the intersection of queer and undocumented identities, how they’ve impacted the panelists’ art making, and larger themes of community and collective liberation. The roundtable will consider tactics of resistance and reclamation demonstrated by participating artists in response to current events, including creating collectives and broader networks of care.
The conversation will be moderated by poet and curator danilo machado with formerly undocumented trans essayist Ola Osaze, drag performer and poet Wo Chan, visual artist Angelica Becerra, and artist Julio Salgado.
The final event in this series will culminate with a virtual celebration and set by DJ Funky Caramelo from Cumbiaton, an “intergenerational cultural movement which utilizes music and art as a vessel to heal and uplift oppressed hood communities.”
This event is part of the series Homoland Security: Come in, Gurl!, the winning selection from CUE’s 2021 Open Call for Public Programs. It has been organized by Anthony Barroso, Varun Khattar, danilo machado, and Laura Veira-Ramirez.

Una mesa redonda centrada en la intersección de identidades queer e indocumentadas, cómo han impactado la creación de arte de les panelistas y temas más amplios de liberación comunitaria y colectiva. La mesa redonda considerará tácticas de resistencia y reivindicación demostradas por estes artistas, incluyendo la creación de colectivos y redes de cuidado más amplias, en respuesta a los acontecimientos actuales de la época.
La conversación será moderada por danilo machado (Poeta, curadorx, Brooklyn, NY) con Ola Osaze (anteriormente indocumentadx trans ensayistx, Transgender Law Center, Nigeria, Oakland), Wo Chan (Artista de drag y Poeta, Brooklyn, NY), Angelica Becerra (Artista visual Mexicanx, LA), y Julio Salgado (Artista, The Center for Cultural Power, LA).
El evento final terminará con una celebración virtual del DJ Funky Caramelo de Cumbiaton, una “movimiento cultural intergeneracional que utiliza la música y el arte como un medio para sanar y elevar comunidades oprimidas del barrio.”

Angélica Becerra is a queer immigrant artist, podcast producer and scholar of political graphics. Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate in Chicana/o and Central American Studies at UCLA. She is the co-creator of the podcast “Anzaldúingit” along with Dr. Jack Caraves, where both focus on navigating life as queer Latinx individuals in academia. With over half a million listens, the podcast has been used as a teaching tool for underrepresented students and was featured in the 2019 Google Youth Tech Summit. Her artwork is primarily portraiture, with a focus on Black, Indigenous, and women of color activists. Her art has been featured in VICE and Latina Magazine. Recently, she was a part of the Adobe Create Forward campaign and a beta tester for the Adobe Illustrator software for the iPad. Her latest collaboration is a series of portraits for the Investigation Discovery channel, a part of #IDxPOV, a project to give voice to those who have been impacted by crime or the criminal justice system and whose stories are not typically heard.
Angélica Becerra es una artistx inmigrante queer, productorx de podcast y estudiosx de gráficos políticos. Actualmente, es candidatx al doctorado en Chicana/o y Estudios Centroamericanos en UCLA. Ella es co-creadora del podcast “Anzaldúingit” junto con el Dr. Jack Caraves, donde ambos se centran en navegar la vida como queer Latinx individuos en el mundo académico. Con más de medio millón de escuchas, el podcast ha sido utilizado como una herramienta de enseñanza para estudiantes subrepresentados y fue presentado en el Cumbre técnica de Google para jóvenes en 2019. Su obra de arte es principalmente retrato, con un enfoque en gente negra, indígenas, y mujeres de color activistas. Su arte ha sido presentado en VICE and Latina Magazine. Recientemente, formó parte de la campaña Adobe Create Forward y fue un comprobador beta del software Adobe Illustrator para el iPad. DJ Funky Caramelo is a seed from Mexico City, harvested by the streets of LA. She's a queer femme who utilizes the stage as a way to equalize female-identified representation within nightlife event productions. Through her DJ sets, she aims to celebrate the music from artists of color, especially those who fall under the LGBTQIA spectrum. She’s the resident DJ at Cumbiatón along with leading marketing, press and promotion for the party.
DJ Funky Caramelo es una semilla de Ciudad de México, cosechada por las calles de LOS ÁNGELES. Ella es un femme queer que utiliza el escenario como una manera de igualar la representación femenina identificada dentro de las producciones de eventos de vida nocturna. A través de sus conjuntos de DJ, ella celebra la música de artistas de color, especialmente aquellos que caen bajo el espectro LGBTQIA. Ella es la DJ residente en Cumbiatón junto con la comercialización, la prensa y la promoción líderes para la fiesta.

Ola Osaze is a transmasculine queer of Edo and Yoruba descent who was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and now resides in Houston, Texas. Ola is the Co-Director for the Black LGBTQ+ Migrant Project and has been a community organizer for many years, including working with Transgender Law Center, the Audre Lorde Project, Uhuru Wazobia (one of the first LGBT groups for African immigrants in the US), Queers for Economic Justice and Sylvia Rivera Law Project. Ola is a 2015 Voices of Our Nation Arts workshop (VONA) fellow, and has writings published in Apogee, Qzine, Black Looks, and the anthologies Black Futures and Queer Africa II.

Wo Chan is a poet and drag performer. They are a winner of the 2020 Nightboat Poetry Prize and the author of TOGETHERNESS (2022). Wo has received fellowships from MacDowell, New York Foundation of the Arts, Kundiman, The Asian American Writers Workshop, Poets House, and Lambda Literary. Their poems appear in POETRY, WUSSY, Mass Review, No Tokens, and The Margins. As a member of the Brooklyn-based drag/burlesque collective Switch N’ Play, Wo has performed at The Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, National Sawdust, New York Live Arts and elsewhere. They are currently the Communications Manager of Lambda Literary and the Editor of the Lambda Literary Review. Find them at @theillustriouspearl.

Born in Medellín, Colombia, danilo machado (he/they) is a poet, curator, and critic living on occupied land who is interested in language’s potential for revealing tenderness, erasure, and relationships to power. Currently Curatorial Assistant at Socrates Sculpture Park and Producer of Public Programs at the Brooklyn Museum, danilo is the curator of the exhibitions Otherwise Obscured: Erasure in Body and Text, support structures, and We turn. A 2020-2021 Poetry Project Emerge-Surface-Be Fellow, their writing has been featured in publications including Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Rail, Poem-A-Day, ArtCritical, Art Papers, GenderFail, and TAYO Literary Magazine. Founding Board Chair for Connecticut Students for a Dream, danilo is a member of the CT UndocuFund and has contributed writing to exhibitions at CUE Art Foundation, Abrons Art Center/Boston Center for the Arts, and Real Art Ways. As DJ Queer Shoulders, danilo has DJd as a part of programs and fundraisers with The Shed, CultureHub, CT UndocuFund, and others. They are working to show up with care for their communities.

Julio Salgado is the co-founder of DreamersAdrift and the Migrant Storytelling Manager for The Center for Cultural Power. His status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the DREAM Act and the migrant rights movement. Undocumented students, organizers and allies across the country have used Salgado’s artwork to call attention to the migrant rights movement. Salgado is the co-creator of The Disruptors Fellowship, an inaugural fellowship for emerging television writers of color who identify as trans/and or non-binary, disabled, undocumented and/or formerly undocumented immigrants. His work has been displayed at the Oakland Museum, SFMOMA and Smithsonian.
Julio Salgado es co-fundador de DreamersAdrift y Gerente de Historias Migrantes del Centro de Poder Cultural. Su condición de artivista indocumentadx y queer ha alimentado el contenido de su arte visual, que representa a individuxs y momentos clave de el DREAM Act y del movimiento de derechos de los migrantes.
