Hasta la Raíz [Down to the Root] Screening + Conversation with Lizania Cruz and Elena Lorac

In conjunction with the exhibition Lizania Cruz: Gathering Evidence: Santo Domingo & New York City and presented in partnership with Reconoci.do and We Are All Dominican, please join us for a virtual screening of Hasta la Raíz [Down to the Root], a documentary film directed and produced by Juan Carlos González, followed by a conversation between Lizania Cruz and Elena Lorac. Hasta la Raíz [Down to the Root] is a documentary about the denationalization of Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic as a result of La Sentencia, a 2013 ruling issued by the Constitutional Tribunal to uphold other laws/policies that effectively stripped an estimated 200,000 Dominicans of Haitian descent of their Dominican citizenship. After the film, artist Lizania Cruz will be joined in conversation by Elena Lorac, founding member and co-coordinator of the Reconoci.do movement, which, since 2011, advocates for the rights of Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic.
The film will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles. The conversation will be hosted in Spanish with English interpretation available to attendees. Please scroll down for a description of this event in Spanish. ASL interpretation will be provided.

A propósito de la exposición Lizania Cruz: Gathering Evidence: Santo Domingo & New York City [Recolectando evidencias: Santo Domingo y ciudad de Nueva York] y presentado en colaboración con Reconoci.do y We Are All Dominican, les invitamos a una proyección virtual de Hasta la Raíz, un documental dirigido y producido por Juan Carlos González, seguida de una conversación entre Lizania Cruz y Elena Lorac. Hasta la Raíz es un documental que aborda el tema de la desnacionalización de dominicanos de ascendencia haitiana en República Dominicana como resultado de La Sentencia, un fallo emitido en el 2013 por el Tribunal Constitucional para apoyar otras leyes/políticas que efectivamente dejaron apátridas aproximadamente 200,000 dominicanos de ascendencia haitiana. Lizania Cruz is a Dominican participatory artist and designer interested in how migration affects ways of being and belonging. Through research, oral history, and audience participation, she creates projects that highlight a pluralistic narrative on migration. Cruz has been an artist-in-residence and fellow at the Laundromat Project Create Change (2017-2019), Agora Collective Berlin (2018), Design Trust for Public Space (2018), Recess Session (2019), IdeasCity: New Museum (2019), Stoneleaf Retreat (2019), Robert Blackburn Workshop Studio Immersion Project (2019), A.I.R. Gallery (2020-2021), BRIClab: Contemporary Art (2020-2021), Center for Book Arts (2020-2021), and Jerome Hill Artist Fellow, Visual Arts (2021-2022). Her work has been exhibited at the Arlington Arts Center; BronxArtSpace; Project for Empty Space; ArtCenter South Florida; Jenkins Johnson Project Space; The August Wilson Center; Sharjah’s First Design Biennale; and Untitled, Art Miami Beach; among others. Most recently, she is included in ESTAMOS BIEN: LA TRIENAL 20/21 at el Museo del Barrio, the first national survey of Latinx artists by the institution. Furthermore, her artworks and installations have been featured in Hyperallergic, Fuse News, KQED arts, Dazed Magazine, Garage Magazine, and The New York Times.
Lizania Cruz es una artista participativa, y diseñadora dominicana interesada en cómo la migración afecta las formas de ser y pertenecer. A través de la investigación, la historia oral y la participación de la audiencia, crea proyectos que destacan una narrativa pluralista sobre la migración. Cruz ha sido artista en residencia y fellow en El Laundromat Project Create Change (2018-2019), Agora Collective Berlin (2018), Design Trust for Public Space (2018), Recess Session (2019), A.I.R. Elena Lorac is founding member and co-coordinator of the Reconoci.do movement, which, since 2011, advocates for the rights of Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic. The Reconoci.do movement has presence in several bateyes (rural communities whose population works in works nearby sugar cane crops) and accompanies Dominicans of Haitian descent in the claim of their rights in front of institutions. Members of Reconoci.do frequently face accusations of promoting a Haitian invasion, threats by conservative groups, and defamation efforts.
Elena Lorac es miembro fundadora y coordinadora del movimiento Reconoci.do, que desde 2011 aboga por los derechos de los dominicanos de ascendencia haitiana en República Dominicana. El movimiento Reconocido tiene trabaja en varios bateyes (comunidades rurales cuya población trabaja en los cultivos de caña de azúcar) y acompaña a los dominicanos de ascendencia haitiana en la reivindicación de sus derechos frente a las instituciones. Los miembros de Reconoci.do enfrentan con frecuencia acusaciones de promover una invasión haitiana, amenazas de grupos conservadores y esfuerzos de difamación.
Reconoci.do is an independent and pluralistic civic network made up mainly of young Dominicans of Haitian descent. Reconoci.do defends human rights and promotes a real and effective integration into Dominican society of Dominicans of Haitian descent. With a presence throughout the Dominican Republic, Reconoci.do holds the vision of a multicultural country where diverse people coexist with dignity, without stigma or discrimination, and their fundamental rights are respected by society and protected by the State.
Reconoci.do es una red cívica independiente y pluralista conformada principalmente por personas dominicanas jóvenes de ascendencia haitiana. Reconoci.do defiende los derechos humanos y promueve la integración real, plena y efectiva en la sociedad dominicana de las personas dominicanas de ascendencia haitiana. Con presencia a lo largo de la República Dominicana, Reconoci.do sostiene la visión un país multicultural donde personas diversas conviven dignamente, sin estigma ni discriminación, y sus derechos fundamentales son respetados por la sociedad y protegidos por el Estado.
We Are All Dominican (WAAD) works in solidarity with movements led by Dominicans of Haitian descent fighting for inclusion and citizenship rights, and seeks to educate and activate the Dominican diaspora in order to challenge anti-Haitian and anti-Black discourses. Our collective is part of a long tradition of collaboration on the island. Our work is one of many examples of transnational solidarity that has been taking place for a long time. A daily practice. Transnational solidarity to combat anti-Blackness.
We Are All Dominican (WAAD) trabaja en solidaridad con los movimientos liderados por dominicanos de ascendencia haitiana que luchan por la inclusión y los derechos de ciudadanía, y busca educar y activar la diáspora dominicana para desafiar los discursos anti-haitianos y anti-negros.
