Join prolific multidisciplinary artists Sonia Guiñansaca and Alan Pelaez Lopez for a conversation reflecting on the ecosystem of undocuqueer artists from 2008-2021. They will trace their creative and political journeys, highlighting people who have influenced them in their artmaking and cultural organizing. In addition, they will share insights and stories from their own creative practices, weaving in excerpts of current and previous works. 

Sonia Guiñansaca is the co-editor of Somewhere We Are Human: An Anthology on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings and author of Nostalgia and Borders. Alan Pelaez Lopez is the author of Intergalactic Travels: poems from a fugitive alien and to love and mourn in the age of displacement.

This event is part of the series Homoland Security: Come in, Gurl!, the winning selection from CUE’s 2021 Open Call for Public Programs. It has been organized by Anthony Barroso, Varun Khattar, danilo machado, and Laura Veira-Ramirez.

Además, compartirán ideas e historias de sus propias prácticas creativas, tejiendo extractos de obras actuales y anteriores.

Sonia Guiñansaca is an international award-winning queer migrant poet, cultural organizer, and social justice activist. They emerged as a national leader in the migrant artistic and political communities. Guiñansaca co-founded some of the largest undocumented organizations in the U.S., including artistic projects by and for undocumented writers and artists. Sonia has worked for over a decade in both policy and cultural efforts building equitable infrastructures for migrant artists. They currently consult for national social justice organizations, cultural institutions, and foundations on artists convening, cultural activations, and civic engagement.

Sonia self-published their debut mini chapbook Nostalgia and Borders in 2016. They are a contributor for the new edition of the anthology Colonize This! (2019 Seal Press), and featured on Stop Telling Women to Smile (2020 Seal Press). In Spring/Summer 2021, Guiñansaca is releasing their second chapbook, #PapiFemme, and launching Alegria Press, a publishing house for undocumented writers.

Sonia Guiñansaca es un poeta migrante queer, organizadorx cultural y activista de justicia social, galardonadx con premios internacionales. Surgió como líder nacional en las comunidades artísticas y políticas migrantes. Guiñansaca co-fundó algunas de las organizaciones indocumentadas más grandes en los Estados Unidos, incluyendo proyectos artísticos por y para escritores y artistas indocumentades. Sonia ha trabajado durante más de una década tanto en políticas como en esfuerzos culturales para construir infraestructuras equitativas para artistas migrantes. Actualmente consulta a organizaciones nacionales de justicia social, instituciones culturales y fundaciones sobre la convocatoria de artistas, activaciones culturales y participación cívica.

Sonia autopublicó su mini chapbook debut Nostalgia and Borders en 2016. Es colaboradorx de la nueva edición de la antología Colonize This! (2019 Seal Press), y apareció en Stop Telling Women to Smile (2020 Seal Press). Alan Pelaez Lopez is an AfroIndigenous poet and installation and adornment artist from the coastal Zapotec community of Oaxaca, México. Much of the artist’s work is invested in thinking with and through fugitivity, language, grief, ancestral memories, and the role of storytelling in migrant households. Pelaez Lopez is the author of Intergalactic Travels: poems from a fugitive alien (The Operating System, 2020)and to love and mourn in the age of displacement (Nomadic Press, 2020),  and was a finalist for the 2020 International Latino Book Award. Their poetry has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and “Best of the Net,” and was selected to appear in Best New Poets 2019 and Best American Experimental Writing 2020. Pelaez Lopez has been building with undocumented queer and trans migrants for ten years.

Alan’s art has been supported primarily by other independent artists as well as fellowships and/or residencies from Submittable, the Museum of the African Diaspora, VONA/Voices, and University of California-Berkeley. They live in Oakland, CA & the internet as @MigrantScribble.

Alan Peláez López es poeta afroindígenx y artista de instalación y adorno de la comunidad zapoteca costera de Oaxaca, México. Gran parte del trabajo del artista se invierte en pensar con y a través de la fugitividad, el idioma, el dolor, los recuerdos ancestrales y el papel de la narración de cuentos en los hogares migrantes. Pelaez Lopez es autorx de Intergalactic Travels: poems from a fugitive alien (The Operating System, 2020) y to love and mourn in the age of displacement (Nomadic Press, 2020),  y fue finalista del Premio Internacional del Libro Latino 2020. Su poesía ha sido nominada para el Premio Pushcart y "Best of the Net", y fue seleccionada para aparecer en Best New Poets 2019 y Best American Experimental Writing 2020. Peláez López ha estado construyendo con migrantes queer y trans indocumentades durante diez años.
