Katherine Daniels: Notions
Evercore Artist Empowerment Award 2023-2024

Poise, 2023; Ribbon and thread on linen, 48” x 48”

Notions is a solo exhibition by Katherine Daniels, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices.

Excerpt from Daniels’ artist statement:

“In my studio, my practice evolved from painting to sculpture and textiles when I began working with sewing and beading techniques, ultimately taking the paint away entirely. The physicality of touch in needlework and the push and pull of weaving techniques engage the haptic, optic, and conceptual qualities of sculpture. In my sculptures, beads function as building blocks; in my site-specific installations, flexible plastic fence weave becomes a colored line and chain link fencing serves as a diagonal grid; in my canvas and linen-based works, ribbon is used as a tangible means of “drawing with fabric.”

Whatever the medium, I see the colors and forms that work their way through the art as pathways. I want to take the viewer into and lead them along these paths. In this body of work, my exploration of beauty, pleasure, and harmony in each composition is analogous to seeking grace, satisfaction, and balance in one’s life.”

About the Evercore Artist Empowerment Award

The Evercore Artist Empowerment Award is an opportunity that seeks to recognize and support artists at a critical point in their careers. Each six-month engagement at Evercore’s New York City offices provides a platform for artists to present a solo exhibition of their work, and in turn creates an unparalleled opportunity for the Evercore community to experience and engage with contemporary art.

Applications for the Evercore Artist Empowerment Award are accepted annually via an opt-in option on CUE’s Open Call for Solo Exhibitions.

The Evercore Artist Empowerment Award is an opportunity for artists who:

  • Have not had a solo show in a commercial NYC gallery within the last five years

  • Do not have current, consistent commercial gallery representation in the United States

  • Are not currently enrolled in a degree program
