Dear Friends,

This year, CUE celebrates its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of work that supports emerging and underrecognized artists and that promotes varied perspectives in the arts.

There has been so much that has changed since CUE first came into being, but one thing remains constant: the need for authentic, robust, and and meaningful opportunities for artists who challenge our collective notion of what’s possible, viable, saleable, proven, or other such indicators of success associated with systems that we all know are far from perfect. The hundreds of shows CUE has presented over these last two decades comprise an extraordinarily diverse community of artists, writers, students, curators, designers, and others from wildly different backgrounds engaged in physical and intellectual work that is varied in medium, process, concept, and so much more.

When I began this position at CUE, I knew that this place was special, but I never imagined how much value there could be in an arts-focused mission that puts people and their needs first, before any particular curatorial concept or vision. The legacy that endures at CUE is not about us as an organization, but rather about giving voice and agency to those whose work we have the honor of presenting. It is also about creating connections and mentorship opportunities that promote guidance and solidarity in many forms: formal and informal, intellectual and social, short-term and for a lifetime.

Through CUE's exhibitions and programs, we have seen this model do so much more than presenting work on view. It has resulted in the bubbling up of an otherwise unlikely community, a time-bending series of artistic embraces, and a web of conversations amongst the work and the perspectives of the many artists and art workers we have engaged with throughout the years. We hope, with your support, to channel this energy into many more years to come.
