The first session of the Homoland Security series will begin with a presentation of UndocuQueer history presented by organizer and scholar Ximena Ospina. Following this presentation will be a multimedia showcase featuring short artist talks, screenings, and performances from undocumented and formely undocumented queer artmakers from around the country: poet Kemi Bello; poet and performance artist Jennif(f)er Tamayo; filmaker Armando Ibañez; artist, musician, and creatix Soultree; and poet and performer Jesús I. Valles. 

The showcase will be moderated by two UndocuQueer members of the Homoland Security organizing collective, organizer and writer Laura Veira-Ramirez and organizer and visual artist Anthony Barroso.

This showcase is part of the event series Homoland Security: Come in, Gurl!, the winning selection from CUE’s 2021 Open Call for Public Programs. It has been organized by Anthony Barroso, Varun Khattar, danilo machado, and Laura Veira-Ramirez.

La primera sesión de la serie Homoland Security comenzará con una presentación de la historia UndocuQueer presentada por organizadorx y académicx Ximena Ospina seguida de un escaparate multimedia con breves charlas de artistes, proyecciones y actuaciones de artistes queer indocumentades y formalmente indocumentades de todo el país: poetx Kemi Bello; poetx/artistx de la representación Jennif(f)er Tamayo; cineastx Armando Ibañez; artistx, músicx, y creadorx Soultree, y poetx e intérprete Jesús I. Valles.

Anthony Barroso is an (Un)docuQueer Immigrant originally from Ecuador and currently living in occupied Quinnipiac land. He is a student, community organizer, parent, and visual artist trying to find ways to learn from and build community with others through art making, leveraging power through grassroots organizing and collective visioning. He is an active member of CT Students for a Dream, Semilla Collective and the CT Undocufund.

Anthony Barroso es un inmigrante indocumentadx y queer nacido en Ecuador que vive en tierras de Quinnipiac ocupadas. Él es un estudiante, organizador comunitario, padre, y artista visual tratando de encontrar maneras de aprender y construir comunidad con otros a través de la creación de arte, aprovechando el poder a través de la organización de base y la visión colectiva. Es miembro activo de CT Students for a Dream, Colectivo Semilla y CT Undocufund.

Kemi Bello is a writer and storyteller based in Oakland, CA. She is formerly undocumented and believes in the power of narrative to expand our collective imaginations.

 Kemi Bello es una escritorx y narradorx con sede en Oakland, CA. Ella es anteriormente indocumentadx y cree en el poder de la narrativa para expandir nuestra imaginación colectiva.

Armando Ibañez is a Latinx queer filmmaker from Acapulco Guerrero, Mexico. He has been living in the United States for over 18 years and lives in Los Angeles, California. Armando is involved in the LGBTQ and immigrant rights movement and is an active member with Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement. His passion for film began at the age of 7 years old while watching Mexican cinema from the 1950s. Currently, Armando is the creator of the Award online series “Undocumented Tales,” a story that follows the journey of a Mexican undocumented and queer server living in Los Angeles. Armando is currently writing the fourth season of the series. He is committed to portraying authentic Latinx characters and addressing real issues impacting immigrant communities in the United States.

Armando Ibañez es un cineasta queer latine de Acapulco Guerrero, México. Ha estado viviendo en los Estados Unidos por más de 18 años y vive en Los Ángeles, California. Armando está involucrado en el movimiento lgbtq y de derechos de los inmigrantes y es un miembro activo de Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement. Su pasión por el cine comenzó a la edad de 7 años mientras veía cine mexicano de la década de 1950. Actualmente, Armando es el creador de la serie en línea de premios "Undocumented Tales", una historia que sigue el viaje de un servidor indocumentado y queer mexicano que vive en Los Ángeles. Armando está escribiendo actualmente la cuarta temporada de la serie. Está comprometido a retratar personajes latines auténticos y abordar problemas reales que afectan a las comunidades de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos.

Soultree is a Pilipinx artist, creatrix, and connector of Waray, Pangasinan, Ilokano, and Ilonggo ancesTree and Marshallese cultural origin. Soultree uses prayers, chants, songs, moveMeants, and co-creations to uplift unseen spirits and untold stories from the places and peoples that have called them in while holding cultural, natural, spiritual, and political space for community.

They launched Soultree Holistic Healing Arts and Activations (SHHAA) in Spring 2020. They followed up their EP Soultree, released in spring of 2019, with MalaGINTO. Currently, Soultree’s main focus is on the GEM Mixtape & The GEM Project Feature Film Visual Album process. Look out for their Seed & Spark campaign to help bring this project to life and light.

Soultree es un artistx de Pilipinx, creatrix, y conectore de Waray, Pangasinan, Ilokano, e Ilonggo ancesTree y origen cultural Marshallese. Soultree usa oraciones, cantos, canciones, moviMientxs, y co-creaciones para elevar espíritus no vistos e historias indecibles de los lugares y pueblos que los han llamado a ellos mientras sostiene espacio cultural, natural, espiritual, y político para la comunidad.  

Lanzó las Artes y Activaciones Holísticas Sanadoras de Soultree (SHHAA) en la primavera de 2020. Ellxs siguieron su EP Soultree, lanzado en primavera de 2019, con MalaGINTO. Actualmente, Soultree se centra principalmente en el proceso de álbum visual de película de largometraje GEM Mixtape & The GEM Project. Busque su campaña Seed & Spark para ayudar a traer este proyecto a la vida y a la luz.

Jesús I. Valles (they/them) is a queer Mexican immigrant, writer-performer from Cd. Juarez/El Paso. Jesús has received fellowships and support from Lambda Literary, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Community of Writers’ Poetry Workshop, Undocupoets, and Tin House. Their work has been featured in The New Republic, The Adroit Journal, PANK, NPR’s Code Switch, The Slowdown, The BreakBeat Poets' LatiNext Anthology, and the Best New Poets 2020 anthology. Jesús is currently OUTSider festival’s OUTsider-in-residence and a first year MFA playwriting student at Brown University.

Jesús ha recibido becas y apoyo de Lambda Literary, la Sewanee Writers' Conference, Community of Writers' Poetry Workshop, Undocupoets y Tin House. Ximena Ospina is an undocumented trans organizer based in NYC. Ximena's organizing touches on education access, economic literacy, political education, and mutual aid. Ximena is also a scholar, having graduated from Columbia University with a sociology major and a business minor. Currently, Ximena is a Program Associate for the New York State Youth Leadership Council and is pursuing a law degree at City University of New York Law School.

Ximena Ospina es una organizadorx trans indocumentadx viviendo en Nueva York. Ximena organiza para el acceso a la educación, la alfabetización económica, la educación política y la ayuda mutua. Ximena es también un eruditx, habiendo graduado de la Universidad de Columbia con un mayor de sociología y un menor de negocios. Actualmente, Ximena es Asociada del Programa para el Consejo de Liderazgo Juvenil del Estado de Nueva York y está cursando un título de Derecho en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York.

Jennif(f)er Tamayo is a performer, poet and scholar whose writing and stagework reimagines narratives about and politics of queer, undocumented figures in the U.S. She is the author of the poetry collections [Red Missed Aches, Read Mistakes, Red Mistakes, Read Missed Aches] (2011), YOU DA ONE (2017) and her latest prose-poem publication, to kill the future in the present (2018). JT has received fellowships from the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, The Arts Research Center, Hemispheric Institute, and CantoMundo. Her work has been staged at The Brooklyn Museum, BAMPFA, Midtown Arts & Theatre Center Houston, and La Mama Theatre, among others. Currently, JT lives and works on Ohlone and Patwin lands and is a PhD candidate in Performance Studies at the University of California Berkeley. Her research explores how contemporary Black and Indigenous poets use vocal and sonic practices to counter-narrate histories of colonial violence.

Jennif(f)er Tamayo es un artistx, poetx y eruditx cuya escritura y escalonamiento reimagina narrativas y políticas de figuras queer y indocumentadxs en los Estados Unidos. Ella es la autora de las colecciones de poesía [Dolores perdidos rojos, errores de lectura, errores rojos, Dolores Perdidos de Lectura] (2011), USTED DA UNO (2017) y su última publicación prosa-poema, para matar el futuro en el presente (2018). JT ha recibido becas del Centro Cynthia Woods Mitchell para las Artes, el Centro de Investigación de las Artes, Instituto Hemisférico, y CantoMundo. Su trabajo ha sido realizado en el Brooklyn Museum, BAMPFA, Midtown Arts & Theatre Center Houston, y La Mama Theatre, entre otros. En la actualidad, JT vive y trabaja en las tierras de Ohlone y Patwin y es candidatx a doctorado en estudios de rendimiento en la Universidad de California en Berkeley. Su investigación explora cómo los poetas negros e indígenas contemporáneos utilizan las prácticas vocales y sónicas para contrarrestar las historias de violencia colonial.

Laura (Lau) Veira-Ramirez is a queer, undocumented writer and organizer. They currently work as a bilingual instructional aide in CT while pursuing a Master’s in Education.
