Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC) will share tools to open a dialogue on how systems of oppression show up in arts administration, including workplace dynamics, programming, and the relationships between cultural institutions and communities. For this session with Admin, learn with TONYC to engage in the core exercises from the arsenal of Theatre of the Oppressed and participate in a forum theatre demonstration. These theatre games will encourage the “de-mechanization” of the body and the mind: when we are stuck in patterns of action and thought that we have been taught by society, or into which we are forced without choice, we cannot freely be ourselves, secure our human rights, follow our own dreams, and be true leaders in our communities.
Founded in 2011, Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC) partners with community members at local organizations to form theatre troupes. These troupes devise and perform plays based on their challenges confronting economic inequality, racism, and other social, health and human rights injustices. After each performance, actors and audiences engage in theatrical brainstorming – called Forum Theatre – with the aim of catalyzing creative change on the individual, community, and political level. Our team of Jokers – the people who help facilitate workshops and performances – now collaborate with TONYC’s troupes to create more than 60 public performances a year. Workshop facilitator Sulu LeoNimm is a Joker and the Program Director of TONYC. They have worked with TONYC since 2011 as a Joker, facilitating Forum Theatre Troupes at the Ali Forney Center, Hetrick-Martin Institute, the Staten Island Youth Justice Center, and CASES Queens Justice Corps. As Program Director, they support the planning for TONYC's Forum Theatre Troupes, the organization's workshops, and the joker team's training in and investigation of Theatre of the Oppressed. Sulu has been a Brooklyn-based theater artist and physical theater performer since 2003, enthralled with making ensemble-devised work.
This workshop is part of the Admin ⚙️ series, a space for arts administrators to support one another, discuss pressing issues, and workshop new forms of cultural institutions. Admin does so by developing resources and organizing events that draw on personal experience and a collaborative spirit. Learn more at: http://www.admin.network/
