Opening Reception with Myeongsoo Kim

Saturday, October 10, 12-6pm

Please join us for a day-long opening reception with artist Myeongsoo Kim in conjunction with his solo exhibition, Mother-Land, curated by Michelle Yun. Visitors can make appointments for 20 minute slots to view the exhibition, pick up a catalogue, and speak with the artist. A maximum of 9 people will be admitted at a time.

Using photographs of stamps, postcards, and landscapes, Kim’s sculptural collages reveal the ways that seemingly unrelated phenomena—and how they are represented in visual culture—are deeply entangled. Images sourced from personal experiences and geopolitical events are dismantled and reconstructed to explore how both landscapes and nationality are manufactured through considerations of the difference between an object and its image.

Health and safety protocols for gallery visitors during opening reception
Visitors will be limited to no more than 9 people at a time. Masks or face coverings are mandatory upon entry. Stay six feet apart from others. An optional hands-free thermometer is available upon entry. Hand sanitizer will be available. Checklists and press releases are available on our website. Limited printed copies will be available upon inquiry. If you think you have a fever, have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days, or have had close contact with anyone who is confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19, please don’t visit the gallery.

If there is space, walk-ins will be able to view the exhibition. We do not require appointments during regular gallery hours.

Access Notes
CUE Art Foundation is wheelchair accessible. There is an all-gender, ADA compliant, single stall bathroom in the gallery. Myeongsoo Kim studied architecture in his native Korea prior to coming to the United States in 2002 to pursue visual art. In 2009, he received a BFA with a concentration on sculpture, followed by an MFA from Yale University in 2011. At Yale, he deepened his investigation into the connection between a desire to revive and relive memories and the constantly changing nature of the materials which act as conduits for transference and recollection. Since 2011, he has been actively producing and showing work in Brooklyn, NY. Most recently, he participated in the 2019 BRIC Biennial at BRIC in Brooklyn, NY, and the Brave New World Photo Festival at the Seoul Museum of Art in Seoul, Korea.
