SOCIAL MEDIA FOR ARTISTS: 
PANEL & BOOK LAUNCH WITH ARTISTS, WRITERS & CURATORS 

Authors Angie Wojak (Director of Career Development at the School of Visual Arts) and Stacy Miller, Ed. D. (faculty at Parsons School of Design) will lead a panel on social media tactics for artists to launch the new edition of their career guide Starting Your Career as an Artist: A Guide to Launching a Creative Life (Allworth Press and School of Visual Arts Press, 2015). Social media is an essential part of self-promotion and networking for any artist. We will examine best practices and give examples of how to use social media from experts in the field. Featured panelists include artist Faith Holland, cultural critic and co-founder of THE MEDIUM, Larry Ossei-Mensah, artist and Assistant Director of SVA Career Development, Anna Ogier-Bloomer, and digital media strategist Ashley Banks. Books will be available for purchase and the authors will be signing copies after the panel.

About the presenters:

STACY MILLER, Ed.D.  completed her doctorate at Columbia University in visual studies, earned her Masters Degree in Museum Leadership at Bank Street College of Education in New York City and her Bachelors of Fine Arts in sculpture and media studies at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. She worked as the Director of Research and Professional Development at the College Art Association as well as Director of Art and Design Education at Parsons School of Design. She has had a range of career paths, from co-founding The Heritage School, an alternative public arts and technology high school in New York City, to being the first Curator of Education at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, MA, as well as developing innovative community programs at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She is a practicing artist, teaches in the photography department at Parsons and is currently creating a web-based start-up for women artists to advocate for their independence in the art world.

ANGIE WOJAK is the Director of Career Development at the School of Visual Arts in New York. As Director, Angie cultivates industry relationships with employers that support internships and employment for SVA students and alumni. Angie is also faculty at SVA and teaches a course focused on studio visits to west coast animation and film studios including Walt Disney, Pixar, and Industrial Light and Magic. Prior to joining SVA, Angie served as Director of Career Services at Columbia University's School of the Arts where she oversaw the fine arts, film, theater and writing program's professional development and career counseling services. She was also the Director of Career Services at Parsons School of Design for over a decade. She is the author of two books and has lectured on professional practices topics at universities and conferences across the globe, including Cannes Lions, Comic-con International, Harvard University, and Pratt Institute.

FAITH HOLLAND is an artist and curator whose practice focuses on gender and sexuality’s relationship to the Internet. She received her BA in Media Studies at Vassar College and her MFA in Photography, Video, and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts. Her work has been exhibited at Elga Wimmer (New York), Axiom Gallery (Boston), the Philips Collection (Washington, D.C.), DAM Gallery (Berlin), and File Festival (São Paulo). Her work has been written about in Artforum, The Sunday Times UK, Art F City, Hyperallergic, Artnet, The Creator’s Project, and Dazed Digital. She was a 2014 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Finalist in Digital/Electronic Art. She had her first solo show at Transfer Gallery in 2015.

ANNA OGIER-BLOOMER is a photographic artist, educator and career counselor. Her photographic work has been exhibited in Barcelona at the Centre Civic Pati Llimona, at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, and The Attleboro Museum of Art in Massachusetts, as well as numerous galleries. She holds a MFA in Photography and Related Media from Parsons The New School for Design, and a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Tufts University, and has been an adjunct Assistant Professor in photography at the City University of New York. She is currently the Assistant Director of Career Development at the School of Visual Arts, and has worked in career services for Parsons School of Design, The New School, and Harvard University. 

LARRY OSSEI-MENSAH is a marketer, independent curator and cultural critic who documents contemporary art happenings for various publications such as Uptown and Whitewall Magazine. His writings include profiles of Derrick Adams, Mickalene Thomas, Kehinde Wiley and street artist JR. As a curator, Ossei-Mensah uses contemporary art as a vehicle to redefine how we see ourselves and the world around us. His latest exhibition We As One features visual artist Brendan Fernandes and is currently on view at Mixed Greens in Chelsea until November 14th, 2015. Ossei-Mensah also is the co-founder of the MEDIUM Group, a boutique agency that works with brands and artists to navigate the art world. He currently serves on Russell Simmons' RUSH Artist Advisory Board as the co-chair, the Guggenheim's Young Collectors Council and MoMA's Friends of Education. 

ASHLEY BANKS is the Director of Digital Strategy at marketing agency TDT, where she leads creative social media marketing and digital innovation for a portfolio of food, wine, arts, and lifestyle brands. A savvy content strategist and persuasive storyteller, she lives at the intersection of art and e-commerce and has expertise leveraging new technology to develop and market creative branding, innovative programming, and core missions. Ashley is passionate about career development and personal branding in the digital era. She teaches workshops on Social Media for artists, creative professionals, and non-profits.
