We’ll be inviting special guests, encouraging valuable connections for participants, so come ask questions, join forces with other artists, and enjoy drinks and refreshments on us!
Our special guests for the evening are: Gabriel de Guzman, Curator of Visual Arts at Wave Hill; Rebecca Jampol, curator and founder/co-director of The Gateway Project Gallery and Public Art Program; and Maia Murphy, independent curator and writer.
Gabriel de Guzman is Curator of Visual Arts at Wave Hill, where he organizes the Sunroom Project Space series for emerging artists, thematic group exhibitions in Wave Hill’s Glyndor Gallery, as well as the Winter Workspace residency program. In 2013, he was one of the co-curators of Bronx Calling: The Second AIM Biennial, featuring 73 artists who participated in the Bronx Museum of the Arts’ Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program in 2012–13. As a guest curator, he has organized recent exhibitions for Rush Arts Gallery, Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), Boriqua College, and the Affordable Art Fair, New York. Before joining Wave Hill’s staff in 2010, he was a curatorial assistant at The Jewish Museum, where he coordinated exhibitions on Louise Nevelson, Harry Houdini, Joan Snyder, Andy Warhol, and Schoenberg, Kandinsky, and the Blue Rider. His writings have been published in catalogues for Wave Hill, the Bronx Museum, The Jewish Museum, Rush Arts Gallery, NoMAA, and Kenise Barnes Fine Art. He earned an M.A. in art history from Hunter College, City University of New York, and a B.A. in art history from the University of Virginia.
Rebecca Jampol is an arts educator, gallery director and independent curator based in Newark, New Jersey. Graduating from Rutgers University-Newark in 2008, she took a leading role in furthering the development of the city’s burgeoning arts scene. Ms. Jampol moved forward to become the driving force in myriad cultural and educational initiatives including: Jajo Art Gallery (08-09); Glocally Newark (2010); The 239 Collective (2010); The Halsey Street Initiative (2011); Rutgers Future Scholars "I am" Program; and the NeWWalls Newark Public Art Conference (2014).
Ms. Jampol is the founder and director of the alternative gallery space & studio residence, Solo(s) Project House (SPH). Artists are invited annually from all over the world to work in Newark, and matches them with an exhibition opportunity at SPH’s NYC sister-space R.JAMPOL PROJECT(s). RJAMPOL PROJECT(s) has represented numerous national and international artists. She is also the founder and co-director of The Gateway Project Gallery and Public Art Program, which recently expanded in the spring of 2015.
Maia Murphy is a freelance curator and writer. After five years as the Program Director for the New York-based nonprofit, Recess Activities, Inc. she is now a member of their Advisory Board. She has also worked at or produced programs for Michael Werner Gallery, The Artists Institute, Pioneer Works, The Museum of Modern Art, Taschen, Creative Time, The Public School New York, and The:Artist:Network. She has served as an advisor to Islington Mill (Manchester, England), Elders Share the Arts (New York, NY) and the Asbury Park Promised Land residency (Asbury Park, New Jersey) and is a founding member of two residency networks: Rethinking Residencies and Common Field. Maia's writing has been published by a variety of sources including The Reanimation Library, The Artists Institute, The Paris College of Art, The Abrons Art Center and Bomb Magazine. Maia was a recipient of a Kossak Fellowship and a Hunter Faculty appointed scholarship and received The L Magazine's “30 Under 30” recognition in 2014. In addition to her work in the cultural sector, she is a dedicated advocate for environmental protection and education and has volunteered with Green Guerillas, the Lower East Side Ecology Center, the NYC Parks Department, various NYC community gardens and several conservation initiatives in her native Colorado.
