Artist/Admin: The Labor of Love

Love animates the field of art. Many of us are involved with art because we fell in love with the idea but the reality can break hearts. This group discussion will explore how love works in art. Topics that we will engage with include the idea of “pursuing one’s passion"; some best practices of sustainable collaboration; and ways to reshape institutions by using levers of power. 

People are encouraged to come with somebody that they are very close to, whether a friend, partner, or family member, though the session is intended to be productive for all. This session is co-facilitated by João Enxuto, Erica Love, and David Xu Borgonjon. 

João Enxuto and Erica Love collaborate on projects about art institutions, labor conditions, and value systems shaped by recent technologies. Enxuto received an MFA in Photography from RISD and Love holds BAs from Brown University in Economics and Visual Arts and an MFA from UCLA. Together they were fellows at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program for 2012-2013. They have given talks, written essays, and exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Whitney Museum of Art, the New Museum, Anthology Film Archives, Walker Art Center, Pratt Institute, Yossi Milo Gallery, Carriage Trade, Louisiana Museum in Denmark, ArtCenter/South Florida, and the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City. Enxuto and Love's writing has appeared in Art in America, Mousse Contemporary Art Magazine, Wired Magazine, X-TRA Contemporary Art Quarterly, among others. In 2016 they founded Contemporary.Institute with the Institute for Southern Contemporary Art (ISCA), a long-term project to establish an experimental platform to benefit artists and other politically-engaged cultural producers through results derived from machine learning and art market data. 

David Borgonjon is Curator at Eyebeam, a Brooklyn-based studio for technology by artists. He believes that it’s high time for us to apply artistic power to the hard problem of better institutions. His projects include Face to Interface, an on/offline project on digital intimacies for SCREEN, and Really, Socialism?!, an exhibition focusing on socialist history as speculative art. His writing appears in Randian, Yishu Journal, and Golden Age: Perspectives on Abstract Painting Today, and the Journal for Chinese Contemporary Art (forthcoming). He has been supported by the New Museum Seminars, the Laundromat Project, and Wave Hill.
