SOLO EXHIBITION OPEN CALL
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When will the selected exhibition be on view?
The exhibition is 5-6 weeks long, scheduled between January and December 2018.
When will you announce the winner?
All applicants will be notified by July 2017.
Who are the panelists?
Finalists are selected by a panel of 3 established curators and artists. The panelists change from year-to-year and remain confidential until finalists are announced. Last year's finalists were selected by a panel comprised of Cecilia Alemani, Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art; Renaud Proch, Executive Director of Independent Curators International (ICI); and Rujeko Hockley, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum.
I've had a solo show in NYC recently, but it was in a small gallery. Am I still eligible to apply?
It depends. If your solo show was in a small non-commercial gallery, artist-run space, and/or not-for-profit space, then you are still eligible to apply. If the gallery was commercial, yet obscure and located outside of Manhattan, you may still be eligible. Please contact us if you are unsure.
I don't understand how to fill out the Budget Worksheet form, can you help?
Comprehensive instructions and a sample Budget Worksheet form can be downloaded here. If you have any further questions, please contact us.
Can I submit an application as a collaboration or artist collective?
Yes, however you must demonstrate a history of working together as the proposed collaborative team or collective consistently for 2 or more years. The application should be completed under one name. In the body of the proposal, please state the nature of the collaboration, and include CVs for all collaborators.
Can I propose work that has not yet been completed?
You may propose new work that has not yet been realized. If you are proposing new work, please include work samples of already completed works that provide context for the new work you are proposing to create. If applicable, include any drawings, plans, or concept sketches of the proposed work.
Will the Project Space be available as part of the exhibition?
Yes, the Project Space is available in addition to the main gallery. You can view the project space in this video and in these photos: here, here, and here.
How high are the ceilings in the gallery?
The ceiling in the Project Space and the main gallery is 15ft. There are pipes and beams in various places at 14ft, and the track lighting system is approx. 12ft from the floor. The ceiling height in the mezzanine area (hallway from the entry/Project Space to the main gallery) is 7ft. Visit our Vimeo channel for video documentation of the gallery.
Can I suspend artwork from the ceiling?
Yes, if it is not too heavy. Large-scale items made out of metal, wood, or other heavy materials are subject to approval if your proposal is successful. Either way, please note the need for scaffolding (~$150 rental per day) in your budget.
Can I paint the gallery a different color?
Yes. Please include the costs for the labor and paint in your budget. It takes approx. 13 gallons to paint the entire gallery with two coats of good quality paint. It takes one day to paint each coat, with two or three people painting.
Can I submit my application by email or regular mail?
No. Applications will only be reviewed if they have been submitted through the online system.
I made a mistake with my application, but I already submitted it. Can I edit the proposal?
No. All applications submitted will be considered final and treated as such. You will not, under any circumstances, be permitted to add to or edit your application once it has been submitted. All incomplete or duplicate applications will be immediately disqualified.
